Background/History

The 116 000 Missing Children’s Hotline was established in Ireland in 2012.  It was made possible through the funding from the European Commission and the Department of Children and Youth Affairs.

The 116 000 Missing Children’s Hotline number was reserved throughout the European Union in the 2007 Commission Decision "on reserving the national numbering range beginning with 116 for harmonised numbers for harmonised services of social value".

In 2009 the Universal Services Directive was extended to include an obligation requiring member states to make every effort to ensure that the hotline was activated.  The deadline for this was the 25th May 2011.  (2009/136/EC).
